• What is the Chelsea Hotel Style?  My girlfriend and I have been discussing this question lately, and failing miserably to come up with a definitive answer.  Some of our residents look like they just stepped out of a fashion magazine, while others wear black leather and tattoo themselves heavily.  One woman has blue hair, and another guy wears a rumpled suit and manages—whether by design or accident–to look exactly like Dylan Thomas.  Some dress up, some dress like slobs.  And some people, like me, just wear t-shirts and khakis like we’ve worn since college.  Though it may be true, it seems strangely unsatisfactory, a cop out in fact, to just say it’s whatever you want to wear.  There must be some unifying theme.

Keeping this in mind, I was out in the hall by the garbage looking through some magazines that somebody had thrown out, when, looking up, I saw a man walk past me and go into the Madonna Sex Room with a roll of toilet paper looped onto his belt.  I did a double take: what the hell?  I thought my Tp2 eyes must be deceiving me.  While I was standing there wandering about it, the man came back out of the room.  He was a young hipster cat, with sideburns and a trucker hat, stove-pipe jeans, and, sure enough, strapped onto his hip by a black, silver-studded belt, the toilet paper.  A fashion accessory?  I had to find out, and so I followed him out to the elevators.  “Looks like you come prepared,” I said, indicating the roll.

“Hell yeah, dude,” the hipster said.  “I’ve been to this hotel before.”

We may not have quite found the answer yet, but perhaps, by keeping our eyes open as we root through the trash, further valuable clues may some day present themselves. (Copyright Ed Hamilton 2006)

  • Our man in Australia has agreed to provide us with some interesting factoids once in a while.  He’s an expert on the Warhol era and has an extensive library of resources about Warhol and various Hotel Chelsea artists. Plus, he has bigger plans in store for the blog in the coming year.

Before releasing Chelsea Girls, Andy Warhol was required by force of threatened law-suit to remove any reference to specific room numbers from the film. Owner and manager of the Hotel, Stanley Bard, sought the changes out of concern for the impact that the film might have on perceptions of the Hotel.

Baird admits to having been apprehensive about having Andy Warhol and his Superstars making a film on the premises but relented because of an affection and respect for Warhol. After several months of filming, the crew were asked to leave the Hotel. The reason for this eviction remains unknown. Final scenes for the film were shot in ‘faked up’ Hotel Chelsea rooms.

“I took a lot of abuse on that film”, recalls Bard. “it depicted the hotel as being a wild establishment. Some of my stockholders were a little upset. A lot of people saw it and I really can’t tell whether people thought it was a real-life situation of that it was a fantasy… In retrospect, it never harmed the Hotel.”

  • Db_1 Because I missed part of the story (and because we’re for Peace) I’m reposting the Devendra Banhard video "Heard Somebody Say."  I just learned that the video was produced by a talented Chelsea Hotel resident.  Click here to play the video

  • Does this guy look familiar?Jeanb Famous French philosopher Jean Baudrillard used to "always stay at the Chelsea," according to an interview in Rita Barros’ book "15 Years at the Chelsea."  Baudrillard was in town recently to promote his new book, "The Conspiracy of Art."  He was interviewed by Deborah Solomon for the New York Times Magazine, but he doesn’t mention his beloved Hotel Chelsea in the interview. However, he did declare: "There are no more French intellectuals."

  • A blog reader was kind enough to send us this report of last night’s sold-out Patti Smith performance at BAM.

Cowboy_2 She and her band performed her "Horses" album (for which she wore her usual white shirt, tie, black pants, boots), took an intermission, then did a second set. So the concert began with, "Jesus died for somebody’s sins / But not mine," from her version of "Gloria"–which was absolutely fantastic–and then just kept getting better. The band–Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, Tony Shanahan, Tom Verlaine and Flea, outdid themselves.  The concert ended with a song Smith wrote for Robert Mapplethorpe for his 40th birthday, as a nod to all the people who have died in the years since "Horses" was produced.
At one point she ushered a ten-year-old boy up onto the stage from the front row to play electric guitar with the band, facing an opera house full of dancing, shouting, very enthusiastic grownups.

She had to use reading glasses to read her poems and she just about lost her voice, but she still has all her moves, and she reminded the audience that even if it turns out that the forces of evil win in the end, we can at least make their lives miserable while they’re doing it.

  • Archivists at Harvard’s Houghton Library recently discovered an unpublished short story in Gore Vidal’s archives. When they called Vidal to ask about the story he replied, "‘That doesn’t sound like my kind of material, that sounds like Tennessee Williams’s territory."’  As it turns out, Vidal was half-right. The story, which he eventually recalled having written, was based on an anecdote that Williams, a friend of his, used to tell at cocktail parties.

17448492_f42a3d0a8f According to Vidal’s biography, Vidal checked into the Chelsea Hotel with Jack Kerouac and "attacked" the beat poet "from behind," as a red neon light flickered through the shadeless window.  Perhaps that was a more memorable experience than writing a story based on a Tennessee Williams’ anecdote.

  • Iriguti If you find yourself home sick for the Hotel Chelsea while in Toyoko or Copenhagen Copchelsea you have options.  Not to be outdone by Toyoko, which already hosts the Chelsea Hotel club, Copenhagen has recently launched a Hotel Chelsea nightclub.

  • Vaspers A while ago, Vaspers the Grate (Former Hotel Chelsea resident Steven Streight) announced his 7 blogs in 7 days project.  In real life, Steven Streight is a web usability expert, so I was slightly nervous when Steven announced that Living with Legends was on his 7 blogs list.  Steven just posted his results and I can breathe a sigh of relief. Here is part of what he had to say about Legends: "Doesn’t it just figure that the hippest spot in the visible universe also has a perfect New Super Blog, already carving out its niche in the grand and glorious Blogosphere 4.0?

There is nothing to criticize in this blog. And believe me, out of love and respect, I tried my damnedest. I shook this blog, threw it up in the air, stomped on it, kicked it around, dumped a pail of cold creek water on it. Nothing happened. It remained intact, warm, and friendly. It’s invincible.

You think you’d like to jump in and start your own blog, you should have a few blogs that you like and are also high quality. Good writing, smart thinking, nice design, right intentions, usable functions, memorable title, meaningful tagline, correct methodology, comments-enabled, web-friendly text, and relevant topics.

You’ll find all this and more at Living With Legends: Hotel Chelsea Blog. This art/historic/lifestyle blog does what basically all blogs, from teen diary to CEO blogs, should do."

  • There was a bum raving in front of the hotel: “these fuckin’ rich people are living in glass Glass houses!  Can’t be throwing no fuckin’ stones!  You see what I’m saying!?  One more terrorist attack and they’ll be out of here!  Out of this fuckin’ city!  Runnin’ scared!  Glass houses, I tell you!  There’s one over on the West side Highway!  And another on the Lower East Side!  They even got one going up on the Bowery!!!”
It was funny how the man’s metaphor suddenly became literal, as if he hadn’t quite understood it in the first place, or as if his brain was not firing on all its cylinders.  On the other hand, what with all poor people being priced out of their homes in the recent real-estate boom, it seemed also strangely apropos.
