Now that this blog has more than three readers, we need a columnist to respond to reader’s questions.  Are any of you folks who are sitting around in the lobby using the free wifi interested in the gig?  I didn’t think so, but if you change your mind, let me know.

How do the apartments work at the Chelsea? do I walk in and ask the front desk if there are apartments available for rent? Or is there a management company? Despite the elevator full of tourists and screechy celebrity-chasers, it sounds like a fun place to live. Cheers, Evan

Stanley, this one’s for you:  "At the Chelsea Hotel, renting is equivalent to a tenured position at an Ivy League college, a kind of golden (spangled?) handcuff.  Stanley Bard, the managing director since the 1960’s of this 19th-century grande dame handpicks his tenants like a club impresario at the velvet rope.  "I want them to be here," he said, "I want them to stay forever."

"There is no waiting list, he said, "but we go through great expense and detail to decide whether someone would be good for the hotel." (Source: NYTimes, June 2005)

So, Evan, bring examples of your art, your transcripts, lots of cash and let us know what happens.

When I moved into the Chelsea, I just walked in and asked for an apartment. Doesn’t sound like it’s quite that simple any more.

I am in love with the chelsea. There is an energy in that building ive never felt before. its a mixture of the chill you get when you hear an amazing song ,and the slight welling of your eyes that happens when youve been away a while and youve finally come home. Atleast thats the feeling I get everytime I walk through those legendary glass doors. I have so much passion for that building as well as the history it holds. It draws me to it making it impossible to believe I belong anywhere else. Its home to me, but you definitly have to be a certain kind of person to feel at home in the chelsea. I am an artist. im a hairstylist. im a painter. clothing designer. many ways i express myself. never have a found so many like minded individuals. the only place i feel normal thats for sure. i have wanted to stay there for eight years. i finally did two years ago. now everytime i can get away i am back there. the first time i stayed there i knew it would be my home someday. anyone that knows me for more than 5 minutes knows the chelsea is my passion. i feel myself constantly trying to live up to an overwhelming reputation. the reputations of the chelsea legends. the only way it seem you can stay there longterm now is if stanley feels you will become one of those legends. otherwise youe just a waiste of a precious room. so a bit of advice for people wanting to stay there. be ready to make amazing things happen or you may just have to settle for visits.I am becoming quite well known, doing lots of magazing work, getting my face out everywhere. still i question if i am worthy of a room at the chelsea. i guess its because i never take it for granted. always feel blessed that there is a place in this world you can go anytime and find that feeling. i also have a page dedicated to the chelsea hotel it is:
    http://www.myspace.com/hotelchelseanyc
please tell me you passions and stories of the chelsea.
