Once again, over on E-bay you can purchase a bit of the Hotel Chelsea’s history. Currently, the bids are at $9.00 for a Hotel Chelsea brochure that folds open to reveal a six panel map of New York City. A room with an adjoining bath (meaning two other rooms shared the bath) would set you back $1.50 per night.

I love it! Note that in the 1900s Hotel Chelsea was ‘Absolutely Fireproof’. That was before Edie Sedgwick came along! :-b

Great Post. Nostalgia, especially with Hotels so timely. Many of the old Madame’s are showing their wear. Hotels really were something in the past. There was charm, the strangeness of all those people coming and going. Lobby’s full of interesting souls. Hotel Managers were something important in the scheme of things. They offered hospitality, grace, and friendship to travelers. The old girls (hotels of course) showed off their best to visitors. Your post reminds me of why as a kid I wanted to be a Hotelman. It was awesome and inspiring to host these worldly visitors and show off with pride the host property. Today Hoteliers are detached from their Madame’s. They are primarily bean counters spending far too much time in from of their computers reviewing by the hour revenue and expense per department in their domain. That and of course serving to grievances with their detached employess as well. The days when the town or city knew by first name the manager of their showcase hotel in their neighbourhood is pretty much over. It is all “branding” and plastic models for Hotelmen. Indeed today “Hotelwomen more and more”. It is all about business and little about comfort, hospitality, friendships and charm. It is now primarily all fabricated in a manual, cookie cut, factory issued, and no life to the real estate. Sadly the days when the old Mandame’s gave birth to a true relationship within their community is gone. Your bringing back to life the times when the pomp and ceremony, the grandeur, charm and pride were still real is commendable and Travelsapien thanks you. Keep it up and feature more. The stories they can all tell is volumous. Regards

In the continuing spirit of mercilessly plundering material from Living with Legends, this 1900s brochure from Hotel Chelsea has won our heart. It is currently being auctioned at eBay. My guess is that it was issued when the building converted
