Last month we heard rumors that the fishing store was moving. Today’s issue of the New York Post sheds some light on the reason for the move. "Chelsea Hotel’s shareholders also want to create one large retail unit." The store has been at this location for over 35 years. One large retail unit? That sounds quite ominous for the already icky retail character of our block.

Very sad about Capitol going. Absolutely chagrinned that the “shareholders” want to turn the space into a “retail unit.” Have they no soul? These are the people Stanley is up against. I believe they may be heirs of the former partner of Stanley’s father and evidently, the Chelsea is just a cash cow to them, a place they can milk now that real estate prices have risen so dramatically in Chelsea. Soul be damned, show us the money.
What’s next to go? Chelsea Guitars? Balaban tailor?LikeLike
