Time Out New York is a load of laughs this week. As one of their suggested "Staycations"
— that’s a vacation where you stay in the city — they suggest you check into the Chelsea Hotel and ask for room 100, Sid’s room. As if the desk clerks don’t have enough nonsense to drive them crazy as it is.
So those of you on the first floor, look out. Here comes a whole new wave of morbid punks. For the last time, there is no room 100!
And by the way, Umberto’s (another recommended stop) is in a new location now — it’s not the same building where Joe Gallo was killed. So, I guess, ask your waiter to show you the bullet holes!

I’m not a morbid punk, I’m a bitter old punk with no time for people who would make heroes of Sid & Nancy. Making a tourist attraction of a site of such tragedy isn’t even bad taste, it’s unforgivably tacky and totally absent of taste, poor or otherwise. A human life was wasted in that room. We must never forget but let’s not celebrate it.
I suggest that the desk staff be armed with mace to defend against anyone crass enough to even ask after ‘room 100’. Maybe I’m too precious but in the total 7 weeks I’ve spent at the Chelsea I have not even stopped on level one- it’s too creepy for me. As for the ugly little goth girl who asked me to take her up there; “only if you put out” delivered with a bored monotone and a whiplash snarl seemed to work.
Totally as a tangent “I’m staying at the Chelsea” is a very efficient pickup line…LikeLike
