While hotel layabout David Elder was back sleeping on the lobby couch the other day, at least one of our 
dark lords was hard at work, writing memos and giving orders designed to regiment and control our previously carefree Bohemian existence. But just who is this larger-than-life figure who dares to take on the daunting task of whipping this anarchic cesspool of a community into shape? Our crack investigative reporters have unearthed the following, closely guarded, biographical data.
Glennon Travis is a 26-year-old eurotrash beachbum from St. Louis, Missouri, who enjoys hotels, travel, and drinking with friends. He is straight (Hey Girls!) but in a relationship (Awwwww!) and his favorite movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Glennon received a degree in management from Tulane in 2003, and though he attended grad school in Hotel Management at Cornell, apparently he has yet to graduate. Hopefully he’s getting a few hours of credit for his work here.
“I think rooms control is an art,” Glennon says, advocating that, like the rest of us, he considers himself an artist of sorts. He is also a self-described “hip hotel junky” (usually spelled junkie, but I assume Glennon is harking back to the original title of Bill Lee/Burroughs first novel). We used to get a lot of these shooting up in our bathroom back in the 90s, so it should be no problem getting used to it again. It sounds like he’ll fit right in.

Unfortunately, that stupid Warren Zevon song is now planted in my head for the rest of the day. I don’t know if Glennon was in a fraternity or not down at Tulane, but privileged frat boys who never got into an ounce of real trouble (except for inappropriate touching, perhaps) loved that song. No surprises on that MySpace page. His behavior belies what a clueless, inexperienced, jerk he is. Did he give a directive to the employees to be ‘cold’ with the permenant hotel guests, while being overly friendly to the short-term hotel guests? The disparity is so obvious! Maybe he needs to finish that degree or ‘attend’ Phoenix Hospitality School online while he hides in the office.

The guy is just doing his job, apparently one that he’s worked very had to get. Maybe if all of you spent more time working and less time reading blogs and lounging at the chelsea, you’d have more sympathy for his difficult position. No one wants to be the bad guy. Change is inevitable so you should all just grow up and move on.

Did anyone ever think to consider that this holy grail of information you are using to bash the poor kid hasn’t been updated in years and that his personal life should have absolutely no impact on his ability to run a hotel? Especially one filled with people that are giving him as hard a time as it appears on this blog. Haven’t we all referenced ourselves in some unflattering way before? Who hasn’t been misinterpreted? I, personally, feel sorry for him. How much is this person truly affecting your daily lives that you have to be so hateful?

So, “Elizabeth,” his job is to turn the Chelsea into a flavorless hotel? Nice job. The fact that the invaders chose this manchild for the job says volumes about them. Grow up? Does that mean accepting the loss of this rare and legendary institution? Change is not always good and not always inevitable. Somen things are worth preserving. We’re fighting for something we love and believe in, versus people who neither understand nor appreciate the Chelsea Hotel and its residents.. Move on? In your dreams.

Oh,. and by the way, where is this “lounging” you mention? People here work harder than anywhere I’ve seen. If you appreciate hard work perhaps you will recognize that of Stanley Bard, who was here almost every day of the week, working himself to the bone while Ms. Krauss and Mr. Elder were “lounging” around elsewhere. If you see someone “lounging” in the lobby, think again, An artist sitting in the lobby might be taking a break, or might be thinking about his work, working in his head. Don’t ever forget that the people getting a free ride out of the Chelsea are Krauss and Elder.

I have had the displeasure several times of meeting Glennon. He is worse in three dimensions than an internet page allows one to see. Rude, classless and relies on the phrase, ” I’ll call the police”, to make up for his lack of speaking skills and maturity. I do feel bad for him, but worse for the tenants of the Chelsea that must somehow coexist with this boy who is obviously attempting to prove something to himself. Best wishes to all.
