Well the hotel really isn’t full but at least the e-mail server is full. Maybe that is what BD is talking about when they are claiming 100% occupancy. Check out the following letter:

I tried to email the Chelsea today to arrange my trip on my grant money. I couldn’t decipher their new website *it’s really boring*…so I emailed them. I got it back.

The reason for the return? :

Sorry, this user (reservations@hotelchelsea.com) is out of disk space.

OUT OF DISK SPACE? A NYC hotel, out of disk space? I might have to return my grant. This is both annoying and more trouble than it might be worth. I was hoping to catch the Chelsea before it sunk. I think I’m too late. Bon Voyage, le Hotel Chelsea.

I hear there’s cool stuff in St Louis. Maybe I’ll check that out instead.

Yes, I hear St. Louis has a big arch. New York is still the place to come to but as for this hotel its seen better days.

I guess you didnt read the part that said “The Chelsea Hotel does not accept reservations via Email”.

The potential guest was not trying to make a reservation via e-mail. They had a question that they wanted to ask via e-mail.

then why did they email reservations@hotelchelsea.com and not info@hotelchelsea, or sales@hotelchelsea. of course the reservations@hotelchelsea is full as im sure countless people who have made reservation that way in the past simply emailed the address again without consulting the website. and as stated on the site, no one is checking that address. therefore the server overloads.
also, the web site is pretty simple, it might be boring, but it is certainly not hard to decipher

cs, you hit the nail on the head. The site is confusing and the same holds true for the hotel. Things are confusing around here too.

I would have thought that the greater point is that reservations@ would be a serviceable email address if these people were even vaguely interested in taking reservations, particularly from us top dollar paying ‘visitors’. From where I sit it’s just negligent to let that email address go dead. If I were to book another trip over there I’d automatically use reservations@ from my address book and even imagine someone was reading it.
Could it be a strategy to kill off loyal returners?
Whether this person wanted to ask a question or make a booking is barely to the point. The management structures that have caused the loss of another paying guest seem a lot more relevant. Presumably, the potential guest is a relatively intelligent person. If s/he has been confused by the website then maybe it’s time to back to the draftboard on the website?
The total lack of customer service in this example reflects the ugly vibe coming out of the place. The message from BD is clear- they’re not interested in communicating with paying customers. Something is rotten in the State of Denmark….

I just went to the NEW and IMPROVED web-site, and saw a picture of one of the rooms. Yuch! Even under the tacky bed-spread and poorly made bed, it’s not difficult to see the sunken mattress. Hasn’t BD heard of the chic, new pillow-top mattresses? At the prices the Chelsea charges, don’t guests guests deserve better?
