It’s hard for me to even write about this, as it shows such a lack of respect for the Chelsea Hotel and its tradition of creativity, and of welcoming a like-minded public to share in that tradition. I can only point out that such incidents are past and parcel of BD’s intentional program of neglect and of allowing the hotel to run down. The slashed paintings are by Arthur Weinstein, a fine artist who deserves better than this. Anyone with any information about this vandalism is urged to alert the proper authorities.

This totally sucks. To change the subject for a moment, does anybody know who that idiot is who guns his motorcycle engine at 4:00 in the morning in front of the hotel? Is it someone coming from No Stars Lounge?

How dare this fucking low-life coward. It always hurts me to see slashes and general disregard for my favorite (and not so favorite) Chelsea paintings. I would never dream of defacing someone else’s art, but I guess I was raised right. (Spray painting asshole messages on my walls before leaving the hotel, however, is not below me)
I’ve always enjoyed Arthur’s work. His haunting, floating images above the 10th floor got me thru quite a few sleepless nights and I’m sorry this happened.
Hawk Alfredson had a similar thing happen to a painting or two of his. Hawk took it with a grain of salt and just figured that the painting took on some new energy after being slashed. I guess it’s all in how you look at things, but it’s still a shame.LikeLike

Well I don’t know who did it but if you find them, may I have the pleasure of hacking their balls off with a rusty nailfile?

as an artist I don’t enjoy the thought of having my art vandalized but it is The Chelsea, violence and knives have become part of the history so don’t look at the vandalism as just something to be angry about(you seem to be angry about most everything you write in this blog actually), look at the vandalism as social commentary and a chance to add more art over the old. Add a new layer of art over the scars, that’s what The Chelsea means to me anyway.
