Finally, some good news for the Chelsea community!  The above quote comes from minority shareholder David Elder, and guests and residents alike will be lining up in the lobby starting at 8:00 AM on Monday morning to take him up on his generous offer.

Seriously, though, hello and a warm welcome to Page 6 Magazine readers.  (The artice will be available online Monday) You Goodbringbackthebards can find more about the Chelsea Hotel, its famous artists past and present, and about the recent conflict, on this blog—probably more than you ever wanted to know, in fact.  [Meet the Principles: humorous introductions to Marlene Krauss, David Elder, and Glennon Travis]

As Annie Karni reports in her perceptive article, we are supposed to have an actual manager now, but I’m skeptical because the place is still a Godforsaken nut house (and not in the good sense, like it was, for instance, in the sixties).  In his fifty years at the helm, Stanley was always at the front desk to address residents’ concerns.  Where on earth is this British bloke Andrew Tilley?

Karni did a good job in reporting the basic story of the Chelsea’s recent troubles (and it’s a complex tale, to be sure), but I have a couple of corrections:

1. Stanley Bard is the majority shareholder, owning 68% of the hotel.  I know this sounds weird, but it was the minority shareholders, Krauss and Elder, who somehow got a judge to agree to let them manage the hotel

2. Also, BD Hotels was in charge for about 10 months (rather than they 2 months reported in Karni’s article), long enough to transform the vibe of the hotel from easygoing bohemian to paranoid schizophrenic.

Basically, what happened here at the Chelsea is that longtime manager Stanley Bard was ousted in a hostile take over by the minority shareholders, Marlene Krauss and David Elder.  They alleged that Stanley was engaged in certain nebulous financial improprieties (such as accepting paintings in lieu of rent), but what it boils down to is a simple matter of greed: in New York’s super-heated real estate climate, they thought they could make a killing by running off the rent stabilized tenants of the Chelsea and converting the place into a boutique hotel where they could rent rooms for $500 a night.  (They were wrong about that.  They are unwilling to commit the money to fix the place up, and in any event they are having a devil of a time getting rid of the tenants who have decided to stand up for their rights.)  It’s the same basic thing that’s happening in building after building across New York City.
Because we believe he was unjustly ousted, and in order to preserve an important cultural icon from destruction, the residents of the Chelsea Hotel call for the return of “Grumpy old man” Stanley and his son David.  Although we are willing to give Andrew Tilley a chance, we as yet have no indication that he is up for the job.  He has to stand up at the desk and actually run the hotel, and that includes talking to the press.  And why won’t Marlene Krauss give the press a comment?  She’s the one in charge.  (Elder is just a patsy.)  Tilley should also call a meeting of the Tenant’s Association to introduce himself and explain his plans for the hotel.  But how much you wanna bet he won’t do it?
We have been getting a lot of e-mail lately from potential guests saying they’d rather not get into the middle of this messy conflict, but we say, come on down to the Chelsea!  You’re our kind of people—not like this guy in Karni’s article who complains about Janis Joplin’s wash rag.  We want people who share our dreams and visions about art and the creative life, not soulless yuppies.  Make a sign that says BRING BACK THE BARDS! and voice your opinion loud and clear when you check in at the front desk.  And don’t forget to get in the David Elder courtesy line first thing Monday morning.  — Ed Hamilton

We’re here to servie people? What is it, a gas station? That’s the best he could come up with? As for Mr. Tilley, the fact that he has made the same mistake as Elder, Krauss and the BD drones — not introducing himself to tenants, in fact sneaking around like a criminal, does not bode well. We too will give him a chance if he makes an effort to speak to and understand the tenants, past as well as present.
Must run now, have to pour a stoli for an old friend who just dropped by.

This is a super follow up to the Post article. Fascinating story. The Hotel sounds so sad though — why won’t they bring Stanley and David Bard back? It sounds like their experiment has failed MISERABLY.

Newcomer, If Krauss and Elder were smart they would have turned the management of the Hotel back to the Bards months ago. However, Krauss is on a mission to destroy what the Bards have built. She’s probably laughing her ass off that the place is in such a dissary now. She doesn’t care if the tourists stop coming to the hotel. She doesn’t care if the tenants don’t pay their rent. All she cares is about is that the Bard Family is not charge of the hotel.

I fear you’re right, Old and Crabby. Marlene Krauss appears to have a pathological vendetta against the Bards and the legendary hotel they created. But does she not care how she is going to appear in history? The longer this travesty continues, the more villainous and stupid and mean she looks. Is this the version of her she wants her daughters to read when they grow up and go off to college? She and David Elder are not only scorned, they are laughed at.
P.s. It bugs me too when article don’t mention that Stanley not only worked long days for over 50 years running the Chelsea, he is also the majority shareholder. It can’t be stated often enough that the two other “shareholders” pulled off this cultural crime while each held a sliver of the stock.

That’s right, I will not rest until everyone of you unwashed bohemians is evicted and forced to sleep under the foot bridges in Central Park, trying to cadge quarters from respectable citizens, such as myself. To restore the Bards to their rightful place at the hotel would be to admit I was wrong and I am never wrong. Never. I am Mistresssss of the Universe. Now, get on your hands and knees and lick my boots until they sparkle.

    My dear Marlene,
If you continue this, we will have no choice but continue to haunt your dreams. Have you been paying attention to your dreams lately? Oh, but you’re the type, I imagine, who doesn’t remember her dreams.
We remember your dreams. We remember that spark in you when you were a child and a lovely young woman. That spark is still there. It’s the spark that makes you, perhaps unwittingly, feel a tender ache when you hear beautiful music or look at a beautiful painting. It’s responsible for that twinge you feel whenever you read about a doctor doing pro bono eye surgery for a poor child in the developing world. It is the spark you ignored and tried to extinguish when you ousted the Bards. It is not too late to ignite that spark and do the right things. To start, restore the Bards to their hotel. The world will unfold to you like a flower if you do.

I love the Chelsea and will continue to stay there when I’m in New York – I actually won’t stay anywhere else. The building has a life of it’s own…sometimes I think I can actually hear it breathing. Hopefully the issues surrounding management and the future of you cherished residents will be resolved. I would hate to see this amazing cultural landmark go the way of so many other wonderful things in New York.
I’ll actually be at the hotel this weekend – Jan26-29th…I’ll be sure to say hello.

I had a dream. I dreamt that in spite of just tiny percentage of the stock held in trust I could find a legal way to weasel myself into control of the hotel. Then I would have a lot of money and that would lead to a lot of friends and celebrities and Heather Graham would dump that dork Charles Ferri and go out with me. Sigh. The first part came true…
(Marlene, I’ve finished licking your dog. Is he shiny enough for you? OUCH!)

i wrote a letter to the editor of the Post mentioning the factual errors in the article. I think it is very irresponsible journalism on their part not to make the necessary corrections and let the world know that the Bards are the majority shareholders (not the printed minority shareholders) and that BD Hotels managed for 10 months, not the printed 2 months.
Needless to say, they ignored my letter and never printed the correct facts. Does this bug anyone else? I mean, I know it is only the Post, but really… they should be more responsible.
