Last Thursday’s art show was a portrait filled occasion.  First off, Storme Delarverie, the honoree of the evening was given a portrait painted by Zito.  Secondly, our illustrious proprietor Stanley Bard was simarily Stanleyportrait honored with a portrait, this one painted by Steven Fisher. (By this point in time, Stanley probably has a whole closet full of portraits!) Stanley gave Storme a big bear hug.  "He’s stronger than he looks," Storme said.  She said that she’d had many arguments with Stanley over the years but that they always made up and were friends afterwards.  She also said, we’re like a big family here we fight amongst ourselves but no outsiders better come in here and mess with any of us.    The portraits were presented by the evening’s emcee, Williamson Henderson, of the Stonewall Veterans Association.

Not to be left out of the evening’s festivities, David Elder commissioned his own portrait from Zito, who was sketching portraits for anyone who cared to pay and generously donating some of the proceeds to the Stonewall Veterans Association.

So what if I’ve done absolutely nothing to create or preserve the culture of the Chelsea Hotel like Stanley Bard, bor stood up for the civil rights of a beleaguered minority, nor performed any great songs nor created any work of art, and don’t know my ass from a sack of trash, but I inherited a tiny stake in the hotel and so I deserve a portrait too.

I’m sorry but “charicatures” in Richard Bernstein’s former art studio? It only took a century and a quarter to devolve this point. The actual Anniversary is a few months past but evidently David Elder is still celebrating his good fortune.
This event, though said to honor a resident we all love, was no doubt approved by resident laughingstock who can begin calling himself by his more regally appointed handle, “Cartooni Elderooni”.
So where you gonna hang that smashing new likeness, David? Maybe you can remove the Shapshak frieze installed above the fireplace and swap it out. With your mug made for Radio. After all that Shapshak dude is long gone while, at least for the moment, YOURE STILL HERE

i stayed at the chelsea 3 times in june. i had read your book and decided it would be a great place to stay. the first time i was there, i was in a room with a separate bathroom. i ran into your lovely girlfriend and i did not realize at the time she was the one. it was great after i told her all about the book i had just read that she told me who she was. she brought me up to meet you, which you probably don’t remember, but it was great. i commend you for all you are doing for the chelsea, as i have read many books now and thouroughly enjoyed my visits in june. it’s just a shame what is going on there and how much they are trying to change the fabulous place that the chelsea is. keep fighting and let me know if there is anything we can do, because we absolutely love the chelsea the it was when we were there in june.
