On Tuesday, Oct 21, eviction notices signed by Chelsea Hotel general manager Andrew Tilley were posted on the doors of a large number of residents, ordering them to pay up in three days or else face eviction proceedings.  These are all long term residents, some of whom have lived here for up to twenty years, and some of whom owe as little as a months rent.  In addition, some of these tenants are elderly and physically disabled.

Why a man who claims to be a friend to the tenants would move to carry out mass evictions on the eve of a depression is, quite frankly, beyond us.  This action comes in stark contrast to the reassurances Tilley gave us at our Tenant’s Association meeting in August.  Though promising no free ride, Tilley specifically stated that he would give tenants a phone call to discuss their bills with them if they fell slightly behind in their rent.  But these eviction notices were apparently posted without a call or even a friendly reminder—which could have been dropped in tenants’ boxes with a minimum of effort.  If  Tilley’s aim was to spring on vulnerable tenants and catch them unawares with a frightening legal ultimatum, then he has certainly attained his goal.

The fact that these notices follow directly on the heels of an economic downturn is not likely a coincidence.  Tilley is on a fishing expedition, casting his nets widely.  Although he knows that most residents will be able to scrape together the funds necessary to stave off eviction, he is betting that a handful will not be able to do so.  When so many hardworking people have lost a good chunk of their savings due to the disastrous collapse of the stock market, Tilley’s opportunistic action is truly morally reprehensible.

It’s probably not a coincidence either that this action comes at a time when we are starting to see increased activity on the construction front here at the hotel.  Tilley wants desperately to renovate, and minority owner Marlene Krauss—who herself may have taken a recent bath on the stockmarket—is squeezing him to come up with some of the funds on his own. — Ed Hamilton

This guy Tilley is hardly living up to his own hype; nothing is changed around here except the hostility levels – currently ‘Elevated’ status. He believes all of those smiling in his face are actally supporting him, but things aren’t always how they seem. The “Rent Demand” notices will backfire – residents will either pay it OR EVEN BETTER they will use that document to force the Hotel to give them their apartment at Rent Stabilized rate. And if there are Rent Overcharges involved the residents can seek a refund as well and really turn that screw.
All in all it seems like a waste of money to bully residents who only have to demand their rights under the law to prevail. Never heard of any of this going on when Stanley Bard ran the Hotel! Seems everyone was pretty happy AND paying rents that were, in many cases, rented well over market value. Way to go, Marlene!

Tilley is a bald faced liar, can anyone really be genuinely surprised? Officially, in just a few months of employment he has lied about tenants, he has lied directly to tenants, and now he’s evicting tenants. Or trying to. Anyone who bought into assurances a made by Tilley at El Quixote Restaurant (who he, Krauss and Elder would also love to Evict) was merely kidding themselves or hoping for the best. Its called a ‘State of Suspended Disbelief’. He laid it on thick and a couple of the more defenseless rolled over. Maybe this is their wake up call?

Elder, Krauss and Tilley are trying hard to turn the Hotel into a version of ‘Survivor Island’ where those perceived as ‘weak’ get picked off one by one, and formerly co-existing residents compete for their continued existence, vying and scheming against one another, a feeble few bellying up to whichever side benefits them at the moment.

By the way, David Elder did not received a three day notice. Wonder why? He’s the biggest lay about in the place.

I don’t get the problem here. The people are behind on their rent. They know they are behind. They don’t need a reminder -“caught unawares” you claim -bs. Sure we’re in a recession, but doesn’t that mean that the owner is operating in a recession as well – and perhaps it’s wise business practices to carefully ensure that you collect your revenues in hard economic times? I have no sympathy for people who don’t fulfill their part of a contractional obligation – pay your rent or move – that’s the way it works everywhere in the world.
Now if you don’t like the fact that old and disabled people get kicked out why don’t you offer them a room in your apartment or offer to pay their rent at a new one? Why should this guy be forced to be the charity?

Andrew Tilley is just another villain in this sad saga of corporate greed. In the end the minority shareholders will make less money than they would have had they left the Bards alone to manage the Hotel

Dear PYO, clearly you are either a Hotel employee, Marlene, David, or some moron at Belkin Burden. In case you haven’t gotten the point, the issue is not whether rent is due — the issue is that the approach of using three day notices without the COURTESY (ever heard of that word?) of a phone call, note in the box, or in many cases even A RENT BILL (which many of us have not received in MONTHS) — is openly hostile and can only engender problems between the tenants and the management — something Andrew Tilley assured everyone he would try to avoid. This is clearly some stupid flack move on either management or their attorneys who, all in all, are clearly the Gang That Can’t Shoot Straight.

Uh, so Hotel Chelsea should be a welfare hotel rather than a well-managed building where tenants are required (as is the case in the United States) to pay their rent?

Tilley is Marlene’s henchman and is there to serve her agenda. He can smile all day long, but he is to execute the same plan that was asked of DB Hotels.
Stanley ran a tight ship and I can’t imagine what Marlene is costing the business in legals. Until Elder can think for himself and see how destructive Marlene’s decisions are for the Chelsea Hotel, the board decisions will always be 2-to-1 against the Bard family. If Elder is there so regularly, can’t he see just how much the new regime (starting with the DB creeps) has ruined the essence of the hotel?

Why don’t they evict the Star Lounge? They owe TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars to the Hotel.

Why don’t they evict the Star Lounge? Because David Elder is ankle-deep in shit with them and in trouble because he hired their “security” to beat up a tenant. He’s stuck with them. And he gave Charles Ferri a $20,000 write off on his rent! Blackmail, anyone? Shades of GoodFellas…

David Elder, “Pay YOUR Obligations” to your stepfather Piri Thomas according to the Los Angeles Superior Court system and turn over $1.2 million dollars of Hotel Chelsea revenues that don’t belong to you.

Who does Tilley’s highlights? Somebody in New Jersey or does he do them himself with lemon juice or some other product. I think it must be a salon because the low lights are fake too….

Grecian Formula or Hair Club for Men? What an asshole. If Tilley thinks this gig at The Chelsea is going to improve his resume, he’s delusional. It’s a major liability and I wouldn’t want to be looking for a job after this shit here if I were him. And Marlene will can his ass in a heartbeat as soon as he’s of no use to her.

their egos will be their downfall. krauss and elder should read some of the great novels written by those who’ve lived in the hotel and gain a sense of how the mighty can topple.

Wasn’t this predictable in light of the recent “No Fishing” legislation report? Appears Mr. Tilley, et al trying to beat the legislature to the punch.

Once again even the suggestion of a differing point of view is greeted with the perhaps doob induced paranoia that the writer is Elder, Krauss or Tilley.
It’s simple: Like it or not, management wants longterm residents out. People are behind on their rents. This is more the enough reason to evict. If you don’t want to be evicted… pay your rent.
I agree with the writer above…. if this bothers everyone so much, get a collection going amongst yourselves and donate money to the folks on hard times so that they can meet their financial obligations. Nothing I am sure would irritate Elder, Krauss or Tilley more then a little tenet unity rather then the simple bitching and moaning that usually passes around here for problem solving.

Hello chelsea residents!! We are dealing with the same bullshit over here at “the jane hotel”. glennon travis (a.k.a.GIGI) is now our buildings new manager, this dude is a absolute moron. richard born bought the “jane hotel” formally known as the “hotel riverview” about a year ago, when born purchased the building we were 200 residents, we are now down to about 50 due to evictions. We are all excited to have found this site and we look forward to chatting.

WATCH OUT FOR GLENNON THE SNITCH. WHEN HE WORKED AT THE CHELSEA HOTEL, HE CALLED THE POLICE AND REPORTED DRUG DEALING FROM A LONG TERM RESIDENTS ROOM. THE COPS BUSTED DOWN THE DOOR ON A B.S. WARRANT BASED UPON THE SNITCH’S REPORT AND YET THEY ONLY CHARGED THE TENANT WITH POSSESSION. STILL, HE LOST HIS RENT STABILIZED APARTMENT UNDER NEW YORK’S ROCKEFELLER LAWS. BUT THAT IS THE KIND OF UNDERHANDED TRICKS THAT GLENNON IS CAPABLE OF. FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE AND HE’LL SOON BE OUT OF YOUR HAIR.

Randy has a point. The timing says that Tilley was trying to beat the new legislation. Odd coincidence, a new law criminalizing tenant harassment was enacted the day before David Elder hired some thugs from the Star Lounge to rough up a Rent Stabilized resident of the Chelsea. In that case I suppose the timing sucked. He should have hired the thugs before it was a crime punishable by years in prison….

    JWC,
Glennon Travis was driven from the Chelsea and you can get him out of the Riverview too. The things you have to watch out for, since he doesn’t know what he’s doing, is that he resorts to calling the cops for every single peep. Somebody sneezes and glennon calls the cops. Glennon also likes to falsely accuse people of drug use.

Hola Chelsea and Riverview people! I’m over here at the Breslin Hotel on Broadway. In two years, new management has thinned our ranks of 388-strong to less than 50 rent-stablized tenants!! I’ve basically got an entire floor to myself (which is actually pretty cool). Keep up the Good Fight, fellas and dames.
