“Last Thursday night Debbie inscribed the paper tacked up on the elevators on each floor with the wildly inflammatory slogan: “Bring Back the Bards”.  The next morning at about  9:30 AM two policemen came to our door.  The security cameras had caught Debbie in action!  (At IMG_2356 least we know now that the cameras work.  We were really worried about that because it seems they were conveniently inoperative when security goons were beating another resident.)  “The management wanted us to ask you not to do that anymore,” the cops said.

“Why not?” Debbie asked.  “It was just a piece of paper.”

"Of course it’s NOT A CRIME to write on a piece of paper,” the cops said, “You’re not damaging their property in any way, and they were just going to throw that paper away.  But they felt insulted.”  It was clear that the cops thought that the whole thing was a joke and that their time was being wasted.

“Do you know about the situation with Star Lounge and all the fights outside the hotel?” Debbie asked, redirecting their attention to a more important issue.  “Yeah, we’re monitoring the situation,” the cops said.  (Significantly, our security guards have not been calling the cops when they witness fights in front of the hotel, endangering hotel and neighborhood  residents alike.)

So, basically, management (which I guess means either Andrew Tilley or Arnold Tamasar or both) called the cops on Debbie for defacing garbage!  The Chelsea  Hotel has a proud history of radicalism and dissent.  Have we really sunk so low that not even this polite, mild mannered exercise in the Freedom of Speech is to be tolerated?

Oh, another thing the cops said was that the management said they would have to take that paper down each night and put up new the next day!  That’s going to get pretty expensive, given that they’ve already been painting (and “repairing”) the elevators for a number of months with no end in sight.  First they painted them gold; then they primered them; then they painted them black; and when that experiment didn’t work, they primered them again, then painted them a lighter shade of gold.  Now we’re back to the primering stage again.  At one point, they looked really good, but I don't even remember what point that was anymore.  Bring Back the Bards!

Tilley is insulted? By what? A slogan? How does he suppose the many of us feel having to share space with an awful hack like himself, and his horrible highlighted hair that went out of style with a vengeance in ’98?
Instead of wasting his time feeling insulted or upstaged, Tilley ought to find ways to improve Hotel revenues. Or better, start counting his days on the job. Occupancy is at all time lows and thats nobody’s fault but his own. Take away the Hard Rock Hotel atmosphere and Tilley is out of his depth.

I agree with Tilley. The graffiti threw off the entire motif he was striving for with the elevators which I can only guess was “Andrew’s Auto Body Repair”. He almost made it

Too bad, Tilley really wanted to add “Crime Fighter” to his resume.

This seems like a genuinely desperate move. Only a moron would waste the cops time on something like this. The city ought to send him a bill.

What a dumbbell this new Manager must be. Instead of phoning 9-1-1, he could have knocked on that resident’s door and asked her not to do that anymore. You know, instead of wasting taxpayer dollars and keeping the NYPD from fighting real crimes? OR, he could have asked the guy he hired to paint the elevator doors to obscure the message with a little PAINT. Or another MARKER. Problem solved. Would have been a good idea, except that guy was busy setting off the building’s fire alarms with his paint spray which brought the Fire Department (MORE WASTED TAXPAYER DOLLARS) and knocked out service on the west elevator ALL DAY which certainly required paying a serviceman to repair.
NICE GOING TILLEY! Cops, Fireman, wasted resources and residents in the Chelsea concerned for their safety. All when a memo would have sufficed.

The thing I find the most concerning about this is….if Andrew Tilley calls the cops on insignificant things like this, will the cops actually come when we really need them? And why is it that Stanley and David Bard ran this place with a minimum of problems and these new people do nothing but CREATE problems? Oh right, now I remember, Stanley had been running this place for 55 years. The olde experience factor.

If Andrew Tilley wants to get a holiday bonus he should be worrying about the 25-30% occupancy rate. If that rate continues for much longer the Bards may very well be back sooner than Tilley expected.

Maybe the message would seem less intimidating without the exclamation point? Hey, lets try it

Mr. Tilley certainly lives up to the nickname given to him here, Andrew “No-Willy” Tilley.
