There was a nice piece about the El Quijote in Chelsea Now last week, pointing out that the restaurant has been a fixture of the Chelsea Hotel family for 80 years, and celebrating it’s antique décor and affordable prices. Though the article, written by Dean P. Wrzeszcz, also notes Where_1 that the El Q has 39 years left on its lease, and so will presumably be safe even if the rest of the neighborhood continues to gentrify, it fails to get at the real crux of the matter, which is that the Chelsea Hotel management would like to see the old timer out of there so they can open a trendier slop trough for rich scenesters.  We hear that the new "brain trust" have been pestering the august eatery with a barrage of dirty tricks apparently designed to get them to throw in the towel and vacate.  In the meantime, be sure to support El Q by giving them your business.

Oh, another thing: Wrzeszsc says that the casualties of the hotel’s recent drive to vacate its storefronts include include “a comic book store and fishing store.”  Well, the comic book store has actually been gone for about 8 years, replaced long ago by a Container/Box Store.  And the “fishing store” was none other than the famous Capitol Fishing Tackle, a fixture of the building for over 50 years, and the only fishing tackle store in Manhattan.  (They have relocated to 36th St., taking their iconic neon sign with them.)  The other stores purged are Balabanis Tailor (the family moved back to Greece ) and Chelsea Healing, the acupuncture shop (relocated to 321 West 24th St.). — Ed Hamilton

And what of the retail space that was vacated by Capitol fishing? Who controls the vacant retail space on the first floor of the Chelsea Hotel? Would it still be former management BD ?
    Why hasn’t it been rented?
Inquiring minds would like to know……

How perfect that this shrine to Quixote and crustaceans ended up in the Hotel Chelsea. It is historic in its own right. Krauss and Elder are messing with them too? I’ll say it again. Marlene Krauss and David Elder are greedy, shallow, slavering, defilers of culture who have yet to demonsrtate even an iota of humanity and caring. They will pay many times over for their behavior. Mark my words. A pox on both their houses.

My theory is the Capitol Fishing space hasn’t been rented because Marlene Krauss and David Elder are incompetent.

The Capitol Fishing space is vacant (though word is they’re using it for storage). The acupuncture shop, ditto, and Balabanis sits as empty. They’re waiting on the right offer from Washington Mutual or Capital One banks, most likely. God knows Chelsea needs another bank of ATMs.

We love El Quixote and we love Manny
he and Jose and Santiago are like family
These guys know as well as anyone that the Hotel would never be the same without them, and we’d not be the same without them. they’re not going anywhere!

The ironic thing about El Quixote and the never ending story of the hotel is that rich scenesters have always patronized both and still do. That picture of Andy Warhol is a perfect example. It is the coolest place to meet for a drink to discuss a project and just a plain sexy place to be. Especially in this weird moment we are experiencing in New York.If we criticize the”scenesters”, we are dismissing a significant part of the Chelsea Hotel draw. Not the yuppie version, but the Max’s Kansas City version.
The problem is, the cast of characters that are trying to reinterpret this grand Dame are missing the money that is already on the proverbial table. The authentic is the only lasting form of cool there is. That is also what made Stanley cool.He is what he is, totally unique and that is why his presence is so missed. Reaching, second guessing and trying to interpret something that is not your mojo never works. This is not a hotel project. It is a movie project, an epic novel. Not a commercial real estate deal.
For anyone to suggest that the upgrade of this hotel should begin with the TV sets is seriously missing the boat. A flat screen TV is a bad, suburban and middle aged criteia of comfort and it can be had at a hojo’s. But Dylan’s room? Patti Smith’s room, Dylan Thomas’s room,Arthur Miller’s room, Madonna’s, Schnabel’s, John Reed, Sarah Bernhart, Sid and Nancy’s- please! Clean the place, keep it clean, keep the history present and let it’s stories infuse the life of the hotel as it always has. That is the value here. Not the square footage of real estate. When Mario Sorrentti is shooting here it isn’t because of the flat screen TV’s. It is because there is still a place to see here that hasn’t had time erased. That killer mural in El Quixote is inspiring! There are still walls that look like another moment here, that have poetry. People shoot here as much as they do the Ritz in Paris!
What is unfathomable is how a business woman raised in NYC with a Harvard education can’t see that this is her money on the table. It has been a comical parade of ham handed miss starts this past year and a half with these folks. Maybe the loss of the entire catagory of “yuppies” with the impending depression will highlight this for the new managers of the hotel or even better maybe a real understanding of the hotel’s value will finally set in and they will start to enjoy putting the polish on a real treasure.

You make some brilliant points – Marlene would be wise to heed your suggestions. Harvard Business may be a rung or two below the regular matriculation but they must have taught her some-thing up there!
