Here are some antique Chelsea Hotel doors that Andrew Tilley threw out on the street.  No doubt Stanley Bard was keeping them around in case any of the doors of the Hotel needed to be replaced.   If ever there was proof that the new management doesn’t respect the history of the Chelsea Hotel this is it.  And why did they need to cut then in half like that – so nobody else could use them.

Those beautiful old doors belong in the hotel. Are they so blind to their beauty and history? These people are irresponsible, wasteful and polluting. And stupid. They probably would have made more on EBay with those doors than they will with the ugly suburban t-shirts, and at least they would have recycled instead of adding to the local landfills. Sawing the doors in half is just spiteful. These are small-minded people.

Terrible. These are almost definitely original construction. They don’t build doors like this anymore.

Those doors definitely had value. Just selling them as Chelsea Hotel fixtures would bring a grand or so each before they were desecrated…OR, how about repair, repaint and put them in storage in the basement? Its not like there’s a shortage of room to store antique architectural pieces from the Hotel. Fire these assholes already.

I like how one Sanitation worker is holding a little piece of the roof garden in his hand, and seems to be directing his co-worker’s attention to the branch as if he somehow intuited its significance.

the only thing wrong with these doors (maybe) was the color – shit brown – and it was nothing a can of latex couldn’t solve.
evidently even a coat of paint was too weighty a problem for andrew tilley

I’d been wondering what happened to the original solid wooden doors that were replaced by black, hollowed-out, cookie-cutter doors that you’d find at a Motel 6. Now I know, and agree that these doors could have been redone, resurfaced, whatever – the alternative seen here is a less than brilliant re-use of the Hotel’s natural resources.

If I was managing the Chelsea, which I’m not, and was already sawing antique doors into kindling, I would have made huge picture frames out of them instead, to hang in the guest rooms. Or coffee tables. Or cutting boards for the kitchenettes. They could have been many things besides garbage on the sidewalk. Am I wrong?

    Hey Ed –
These doors never were part of the hotel. They were made for a film shoot and were damaged in various ways as part of the movie. You should really investigate what you say before you put this misinformation on your web site!

Thats a lot of B.S. “wrong again”.
These doors are Hotel doors, they were stacked in the basement for months and months and months. Don’t even try it, dumbass. Those of us who live here know what the Hotel’s doors like like.

Film shoot my ass. Nice planted comment, New Management. Keep going with that story and watch how stupid you look. The doors were carefully investigated, as you suggest they weren’t, as they laid there on the 23rd street. They were solid oak doors removed from the Chelsea, not props. Only Tilley and his Staff Infection would think a ruse comment like that would confuse us, who know every detail of the Hotel Chelsea. You neglected to mention what imaginary film shoot they were from.

Not Chelsea doors? There are only dozens of them still installed in the Hotel. How dumb do you think we are Mr. Tilley? Or maybe ‘Wrong Again’ is your little sidekick Osama Bin Bathroom Specialist

I suppose the branch is part of a film shoot too, and not part of the roof gardens that Andrew Tilley has caused to be demolished with his subversive calls to 311. He should call his wife as often as he calls the city to complain.

Tilley cut these century-old doors in half rather than pay extra to have them carted away. What a complete loser. The only consolation is that his family’s name will be forever associated negatively with the destruction of the Chelsea Hotel. When the books on this episode are written, and those responsible named, his will be right at the top. Hopefully it serves as an ongoing embarassment to whatever hellspawn this guy punts out. Somebody has to take the blame, Tilley seems more than deserving enough.

‘wrong again’ is obviously a new management mouthpiece.
see, even when the photographic proof is before these idiots eyes (and everyone else’s, including the news media) they still think they can wriggle out from beneath the blame. try not destroying shit to begin with and then you dont’ spend so much time covering up

I thought that they were original doors and felt upset about them being sawed in half and in the trash. But, at closer look, they were made with compressed board in the center, not the original solid doors. Not that the latest management isn’t capable of destroying anything original.

Was the potting soil filling these garbage bags from the Movie shoot, too? “Wrong Again” knows all the answers – just not their own name.
If the garbage pickers have green thumbs its usually from gangrene, not a desire to pick for cans through the remains of our roof garden.

Is it possible that these people will eventually realize how much damage that they have done? Will they righteously leave their posts and hand over these responsibilities to someone who cares about the Chelsea? There must be some small part of them who realizes it is time to go. I loved the Chelsea and will return someday when Stanley returns. BRING BACK THE BARDS!

Sorry NO NAME, I have been in the basement many times over the years and have seen all kind of doors piled up. These may have been piled up too, but they didn’t make compressed saw-dust doors in 1883. I happen to be fortunate enough to have an original door.

So what if they were not made in 1883. They were obviously not made yesterday. They should not have been thrown out, these are easily 1950s doors, not garbage.

It would definitely be easy to believe that the new management would throw out original doors. In the past, they’ve thrown out Stanley Bard’s archives which included art by former tenants.

    Dear Old and Crappy:
You’re absolutely right – they threw out much of the valuable art that they supposedly sued Stanley to get in the first place.
I myself found a Harry Smith work on paper in the garbage outside the hotel and it was recently appraised for nearly $10,000!
The new management are absolute dumbbells –

i found a 1950s portrait of arthur miller by presidential sculptor rene shapshak. tossed in the rubbish. certainly miller sat for the portrait while the two lived in the hotel. it may have even belonged to him. if not shapshak, doesn’t new management know who arthur miller is, or what he looks like?

The one I looked at didn’t look like compressed sawdust, but oak. But really, who cares when they were made, 1883 or 1953. They are Chelsea Hotel doors, and they could be used again. It truly seems the new management wants to turn the hotel into something generic and devoid of real personality, something like cheesy club donwstairs. They are so vain and egotistical they actually think they know what they are doing. What I want to know is, who’s paying for the hotel now? Occupancy is way way way down. When does the cost of operating the hotel come out of Marlene’s pocket, or Piri’s millions, which David Elder wrongly controls? Are they trying to bankrupt the hotel so the Bards are forced to sell?

If you look at the picture closely, you will see a big hole in one of the doors (the one laying on the right of the sidewalk). It was supposed to be shot through by a gun in a film that happened in November of last year. There were a number of doors made for this movie. They did look exactly like the hall doors because THAT WAS THE POINT!!! It was an important part of the movie, and had to look like the rest of the hall.

Of course it was an “important” horror flick scene, probably the most important horror flick of this century.
BRING BACK THE BARDS, who wouldn’t think of ransacking the Hotel in the name of horror flicks, who don’t discard valuable, historical artworks, but instead preserve those treasures for all to enjoy.

The doors are part of the story but far from the whole story which is the manipulation of DOB services by Andrew Tilley to harass long term tenants, both residential and commercial, into leaving. Tilley must figure if the place is miserable to reside in, people will go elsewhere. He’s pretty wrong about that one. He and sidekick Osama Bin Bathroom Specialist are quickly running out of time.

All this rubble, ironically, is sitting in the same spot Fox News was after Tilley threw THEM out of the Hotel for covering his illegal demo of Bob Dylan’s apartment.
