Pictured below is the results of Chelsea Hotel minority shareholder's Krauss and Elder's ongoing campaign to squelch free speech at the Chelsea. DOB has issued a violation to the Hotel because the "Bring Back Stanley Bard" sign was attached to the balcony, which they're calling a fire escape.  Tenant activist Arthur Nash has this to say about the latest development:

"Even as minority stakeholder David Elder was embracing free speech with a self-serving blurb published in Chelsea Now, he continued to dole out disdain for those whose expressions are, appropriately enough, afforded the most protection under the law — in this instance, pro-Bard Family tenants who do (and will continue to) oppose his hostile takeover of the Chelsea Hotel. In the past, Elder dealt with what he considers unpopular speech not inside the courtroom but by retaliating with violent thugs who he clandestinely paid in cash, and by initiating retaliatory complaints with DOB that wrecked the rooftop gardens and caused our balconies –aka fire escapes– to be rendered barren in time for spring. In spite of this harassment David Elder may be entitled to thanks for his most recent complaint which, while equally bogus and being selectively enforced, will permit the Bard Banner campaign to keep evolving, perhaps into NEON."

Yeah, it really looks like that sign was blocking the fire escape!  And besides, excuse me for being cynical but does anyone really believe that Kruass and Elder care whether or not Arthur is injured in a fire!

The signs in chronological order from 2007 – 2009:

The sign is no longer attached to Arthur Nash's terrace railing but it's still displayed!

It is a very Giuliani-like regime with Elder and Krauss who use any means necessary to get what they want. They judge Stanley and have some sort of holier-than-thou attitude– yet they bend the law and use any means necessary (thugs, henchmen, etc).
Is the banner that much of a concern when the hotel rooms are empty?

as long as there are bedsheets there shall be bring back the bards banners. just as david elder surveils the department of buildings website for complaints — then signals the illegal work to stop, albeit temporarily — tenants can hang banners then simply move them down when mr. elder calls in his petty complaints. when the inspectors leave, hang them out again as if they were david elder’s own dirty laundry, of which hes got plenty!

I’ve yet to see a single copy of Chelsea Now in the lobby. Next time the paper covers a story about the Hotel being savaged they ought to bring over a fat stack and put David Elder’s tolerance to the test.

David Elder and Marlene Krauss are right ujp there with the Madoffs as examples of what went wrong with New York. Go Artie.

See, hindsight being 20/20, instead of going out and finding goons to ambush Artie, Mr. Elder could have just set his apartment on fire and waited for the Bring Back Bard banner to foil any escape plan.
Anyway, Mr. Elder and Mrs. Krauss must give a hoot; didn’t they install a brand new smoke detector in the hall outside Artie’s apartment?

I have just been informed that it wasn’t a smoke detector but rather a surveillance camera disguised as one.

Well one thing we can tell from these photos is that David Elder wasn’t hiding Piri Thomas’s stolen money behind the Bard banner.
    Its still missing….

the banner reminds me of what new management wants the world to forget — that people still LIVE at the chelsea hotel.

If the saboteurs in the front office are to be believed the banner obstructs the fire escape, as do the potted plants and balcony chairs tenants once enjoyed, the roof gardens were making the Hotel fall apart structurally, the antique mailboxes behind the desk were begging to be torn down unceremoniously, Bob Dylan’s old room needed gutting like a fish, tenants require dopey, lazy or just plain menacing security guards 24-7 eyeballing us, and omnipresent spy cameras through which they watch us, and to be served lawsuits for being one month late with rent, and all of the happy horseshit which was never a part of life at the Chelsea when Stanley was running things.
