The upcoming art show in the old Capitol Fishing Tackle storefront is being sponsored by a group called “No Longer Empty” which has the laudable goal of addressing two problems caused by the recession: empty retail spaces and the collapse of the art market.  What they don’t seem to realize is that the Stevesobczukimage Capitol space was not emptied by the recession, but by the greed of the very people now in charge of the hotel, Marlene Krauss and David Elder, who pressured Stanley Bard to more than double Capitol’s rent.  This happened three years ago, during the boom, and the space is still empty, though not because of the recession, but because Krauss and Elder want it empty in order to increase the value of the building so they can sell it.  Reportedly, they have turned down offers from two prospective tenants.

The “No Longer Empty” group doesn’t know much about the history of the building, which is obvious from their press release.  They think the storefront next to Capitol (which they will also be using) contained a Tattoo Parlor.  Actually, it was an Acupuncture Shop called Chelsea Healing, and it too was forced out by Krauss and Elder raising its rent through the roof. (Please note, Dylan Thomas did not die at the Hotel. And, I’ve never heard the hotel referred to as the “birthplace of punk”.  Do they mean "the death of a punk?")

Both Capitol Fishing Tackle and Chelsea Healing are alive and well at new locations—hardly victims of the recession!  Hey “No Longer Empty,” if you’re worried about spaces such as these being emptied, perhaps you should be fighting against economic booms, or better yet, if you’re really concerned about the Chelsea Hotel, against Krauss and Elder.  – Ed Hamilton  (Photo: Steve Sobczuk,Capitol Fishing Tackle 1967)

Absolutely right. Those spaces were emptied by GREED, not an economic downturn no one had predicted at that point. Least of all biz whiz Marlene Krauss…hey EMPTY NO LONGER, how about a little research? You’ve either gotten sucked into a propaganda machine or you just care more about a “free” rental than you do about the locations you occupy.

This group is collaborating with the very evil forces which caused the storefronts to be vacant to begin with. Forget the paintings: its the whitewash thats the main attraction during this event.

In the spirit of full disclosure I would like to know how much No Longer Empty paid to rent the two spaces. Is it in line with what Capitol Fishing Tackle was asked to pay per month when their lease expired? Is it in line with what Chelsea Healing was asked to pay per month when their lease expired? Is the Hotel taking a cut of any artwork that is sold? How does this financially benefit the artists and the hotel? If the art market has crashed then how much money can these artists expect to gain from this exhibit? Does the art address the issues that brought about the recession? Not from what I’ve seen so far.

Exactly what I was kinda sorta curious about.
Is there a cause-specific message in the artworks being displayed or is it just a stop-n-shop? Won’t it be empty again after that weekend? How does it aim to change anything?
I also don’t understand what the collapse of the commercial real estate market and a downturn in the art market have to do with one another. How are these compatible as causes?

Yeah, unfuckingbelievable, to do this on this anniversary. What kind of assholes are they at No Longer Empty? Are they unaware of the significance of this anniversary, and got snookered by David Elder, using them to try to buy himself some sorely needed credibility? Or are they aware, and just don’t care, willing to sell out fast and dirty anbd art history be damned?
