Matt Nestel of DNAinfo has written an illuminating article on the recent plight of our friend and neighbor, gay rights activist Stormé Delarverié.  Hospitalized for dehydration last month, Stormé—famous for the independent Storme and assertive spirit that led her to throw the first punch at Stonewall—was subsequently transferred to the psychiatric ward at St. Vincent’s, and then to a nursing home in Brooklyn.  Hopefully, Nestel’s article will bring this unfortunate situation to the attention of people in a position to aid Stormé.  Though she’s 89 years old and need a little bit of help, Stormé is of sound mind and body and by all accounts ready to come home.  We look forward to her swift return to the Chelsea.

Another problem that Nestel draws attention to is the disposition of Stormé’s personal effects.  Stormé possessed an archives of documents and memorabilia relevant to both the early history of drag performance and to the gay rights struggle, as well as a collection of art works by early Chelsea Hotel residents.  Though in the article minority shareholder Marlene Krauss disavows all knowledge of the whereabouts of Stormé’s possessions—some of which may have been “misplaced” when Stormé’s room was cleaned during her absence—we suggest that she take a more active role in guaranteeing the safety of this material.

Ah poor Stormé, so sorry to read this. She was my neighbour last year and I loved her instantly. Was hoping to see her again in good health when I’m coming over in June. I so hope that she can come back to the Chelsea. The Chelsea Hotel just isn’t the same without her!

This is ELDER Abuse, pure and simple — the end result of a greedy, demented, convoluted plan by corporate raiders to deprive an aging artist of her home, then convert it into a far more profitable Hotel room for tourists.
If you don’t gather that much then you’re living in the dark.

Its so touching to see so many of Storme’s friends and concerned parties turning up to comment on her current situation.
Basically, if you haven’t stepped up to the plate and done something about this injustice, or at minimum stood up and said something designed to protect the weakest among us then you’re a loiterer here — and a helpless one at that, only haunting these halls because you wouldn’t recognize your own name without the address attached to it.
If Storme Delarverie is out, YOU’RE NEXT.

If Storme was just sent to the hospital for dehydradtion, why has she now been sent to a nursing home? Where they just looking for an opportunity to grab her? I have heard that her room is quickly being converted to a transient room.

I doubt Elder and Krauss see Storme as a human being, let alone the magnificent figure she is. They see a room they can convert to nightly rate. They see dollars. This, in essence, is the conflict between the legacy of the great Chelsea and the minority shareholders’ vision for it, which is all about profit. (At one time they may have been interested in gaining some social cachet from it as well, but their actions ruined that early on and nothing they do now can fix the image New York has of them as greedy and rapacious.) How much longer until these bloodsuckers are gone?

The DNAinfo posting aside, I’m shocked at how little media attention is being paid to this famed performer’s sudden change in circumstances. Its unconscionable that her belongings were thrown out in the street. Is this the punishment for growing old in NYC?

Call me crazy but are you saying this poor old woman’s story made you want to book a room at the Hotel Chelsea?

Storme is the one person I’ve run into every single time I’ve ever been to the Chelsea. So sorry for all that’s happening. Do you guys have any update on her condition or the location of her possessions??
