In a recent, distressing trend at the Chelsea, art works have been disappearing from the walls, some of Oct2010vsdec2010 them never to be seen again.  These fall into a few distinct categories:

1. Evicted Art: several resident artists removed their canvasses after they were evicted.

2. Trashed Art: at least two significant art works were discovered in the trash on 23rd Street: a framed sketch of Arthur Miller by the artist Rene Shapshack; and a painting by a resident artist that once graced Stanley Bard’s office (the latter reportedly worth about $10,000).

3. Stolen Art:  paintings by two deceased artists, Herbert Gentry and Arthur Weinstein, have been reported stolen by their widows.  Gentry is a world-renowned artist, and his painting was worth upwards of $50,000.

4. Mystery Art: several canvasses have disappeared with no trace, including two by the Japanese Artist Hiroya, one a large collaborative canvas that was very popular with tourists, the other a Dee Dee Ramone tribute.

5. Sold Art: the reclining nude by Akbar Padamsee that had long hung above the door to the lobby (see photo of lobby above), and that disappeared in late 2010, has recently resurfaced.  Turns out it was auctioned off by Sotheby’s in March to an unnamed collector—for a whopping $1.4 million!

Padamsee’s canvas was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Montreal in 1960, and, according to Sotheby’s Reclining-nude-akbar-padamse catalog, entered a “private collection” shortly thereafter.  Though it is not specified in the catalog, that would presumably be the collection of Stanley Bard, ousted manager of the Chelsea Hotel.

We are also very concerned as to the fate of two angular canvases by the Australian artist Brett Whiteley, (seen above the desk in 2008  and in 2010 in the photos) whose work has recently been commanding prices in the millions of dollars.  The last time we caught a glimpse of these paintings, they were stacked against a wall in Stanley’s office; but now, according to an  anonymous tipster, several paintings were observed being carted out of the hotel last Wednesday and taken Whiteleysidebyside away in a van.  Probably we will see them up for sale at Christie’s soon enough.

For now, residents are left to stare forlornly at blank spaces on the discolored walls of our lobby and stairwell as we mourn the looting of our proud artistic tradition.  At the very least, part of that $1.4 million windfall should be used to compensate the widows whose husband’s stolen paintings formed an integral part of that tradition.

What in the hell are all of the damn spy cameras pointed at anyway? The floor? Not the valuables on the walls? This is completely outrageous. And again, where is management? Is there any management? Not that it replaces stolen or “missing” artwork, but this should all be covered by the Hotel’s insurance policies. Are there insurance policies? Who even knows anymore. Really disgraceful that the Hotel’s collection is being sold off to the highest bidder.

    I agree 1000%!
If the seller has any decency, they ought to devote what amounts to a small fraction of the Christies proceeds to compensate the artists families whose works have been stolen — adding insult to injury — right from their noses.
    C’mon, people!

And, of course, this selling off of the Chelsea’s legacy isn’t even good business. Here’s a recent visitor’s review of the hotel from http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d219622-r115734274-Chelsea_Hotel-New_York_City_New_York.html:
    “Chelsea is dead”
    Reviewed July 24, 2011 NEW
In 2008 I stayed in the Chelsea for the first time and had an amazing experience. A doorman trading marijuana in the lift, a large room with a nice old interior, a lot of characters sitting in the lobby, all just very authentic.
This time it was all just horrible. Mold in the bathroom, smelly rooms and bad service. And it was full of teenies, not one or two who found the the spot of fame of history, but 80% of the guests have turned the Chelsea into a BnB place.
And I also have an explanation why, Wikipedia says: “On June 18, 2007, the hotel’s board of directors ousted Bard as the hotel’s manager. Dr. Marlene Krauss, the daughter of Julius Krauss, and David Elder, the grandson of Joseph Gross and the son of playwright and screenwriter Lonne Elder III, replaced Stanley Bard with the management company BD Hotels NY”
So my advice: don’t fall into the tourist trap only because a long time a go, the Chelsea lived up to its reputation.
Stayed July 2011, traveled on business

The Chelsea Hotel has garnered a mere 2.0 rating overall. Can you believe it? There are fleabags in Times Square that earn better than a 2.0 rating. I’m almost certain of it. I guess ‘Under New Management’ didn’t translate to ‘new and improved’.

Whomever art work is “missing ” Stolen” should go to the police precinct and file a stolen property report.
This way if the art shows up in an auction or even a private sale you will have some recourse as the can probably stop the sale until the investigation is complete. So , Do not wait …make a report NOW!
    Good Luck

And, If Stanley Bard is the man I think he is…he should have no problem confirming to authorities the “thefts”. So speak to him as well…as he is the only one that probably can help with any sort of documentation or testimony proving the ownership of the art.

    There are big changes a-comin’.
The current management may be chronically lazy, completely disorganized, self-absorbed, and naïve, but they are not totally and completely dumb, or at least not totally in control. Believe me when I say that ‘they’ (although really it is only one person and his hopeful young minions) have orders from above. As much as it may sometimes seem as if A. Tamasar is some kind of totalitarian leader, one who omnipotently hands out unquestioned orders like God Almighty, that isn’t really true. “Chelsea 23rd Street Corporation” — that abstract entity — has made this decision to collect and sell the art and they made it because they believe that they are legally justified in doing so.
They also made it because they are done. Our beloved protagonists: ‘The Bards’, have lost this war. Stanley is now a sitting duck figurehead, or, really, a metaphor for what the Hotel once was, but no longer is. Yes, David made his attempt to interest investors in the Old Girl, but that did not work.
Joseph Chetrit is purchasing the Hotel.
The Hotel Chelsea as we know it is about to go bye-bye. Really. Kiss her good-bye. The art, now being removed from the walls and carted off for appraisal and auction, is all part of the beginning: of the end. It is all part of the end of an era. It is all part of everyone looking to make as much money as they can before the final sale. It is all part of the prep for major interior renovations that I guarantee you WILL happen post-purchase. Finally, it is all part of what Patti Smith recently described when she said that New York is no longer the place for aspiring artists, that “New York City has been taken away from you.”
I don’t mean to sound cold, nor do I think that this transition will be easy. But I do mean to sound real. There are still contracts to be signed, along with plenty of ‘i’s to be dotted and ‘t’s to be crossed. If you were wronged by the corporation or its management in any way NOW, not later, is the time to formally file your complaints. Do not just b-tch about it in the blogs: go to the authorities, consult your lawyers and make sure that you are aware of your rights; make sure that your own ‘i’s and ‘t’s are taken care of right NOW.
Do not let this be a time of denial and baseless hope. Allow this to be a time of grief and justice.

Ha, totalitarian orders to do what? Clean up a spill? Carry a bag? Let’s not give Arnold “Scamasar”, as we much prefer to call him, more credit than is due. The Hotel Chelsea runs itself. Ask anyone who has worked there for a significant period. No problem arises in the course of any one day that hasn’t been dealt with a thousand times before, or more. Nothing depends on the current manager. A lot depended on the Bards, and Chetrit makes a foolish investment if he thinks this slice of real estate is worth moose droppings without the atmosphere that the Bards invented and nurtured. Plus he’s got an awful lot of actual residents to deal with. Negotiating with Krauss and Elder was a cakewalk compared to negotiating with some of us who, unlike the Pilgrims, aren’t early settlers.
As for the doomsday talk, you can rest assured that the entire Krauss/Elder cabal has some pretty devastating surprises in store for them and of the ‘don’t count your chickens’ variety.
PS Patty Smith says NYC is no longer a place for young artists well, ok, but her former apartment that she toured while promoting her book is no longer a place inhabitable by human beings. Accoring to an eyewitness, soon after her visit it became a storeroom for huge masses of potentially toxic rubble from all the illegal demolition work that Marlene Krauss, David Elder and their wannabe lapdog Scamasar have brought to bear upon this great landmark.

What i find disturbing about this is how little the long term tenants of the Hotel have been told about upcoming changes. Through this willful disregard, we are once again being treated like part of the problem instead of part of a community.

Don’t despair, cuz they don’t care.
They would just as soon see you lose it all and not even bat an eyelid. This is because they have a one track mind: finalizing the imminent sale and maximizing their own profits. For them it is money above all, above humanity, above ethics, above anything else!
This is why I said know your rights; it will be a very cold day in Heck when they will help you learn about any of your rights or provide you with a modicum of relevant information that even a NYC slumlord would feel obligated to provide. To put it crudely, you’re dealing with some real sleaze.
SDS thinks that the residents are in for the fight of their lives, hey, well that much at least is probably true. You need to make sure that you know what you have, what you don’t and what you need to get.

Chetrit reportedly signed the union contract so I’m guessing union employees would be exempt from termination, no? And that would be virtually all (long term) employees. Those brought in by new management I’m not so sure about. Actually, I’m not sure at all so if anyone has a perspective on this please post.

Closing the hotel down for one year, is Chetrit’s way of getting around the union negotiations that supposedly took place before the eminent closing. Now, if he doesn’t have a hotel to run, he doesn’t need a staff. Right? The contract will be up for renewal July 2012. I hope that the unions have been contacted to fight this somehow. The (most of) staff who have been here before the coup have been like family to me.

It seems that Chetrit would need to keep some staff even if they cease operating the Hotel for a year. Someone will have to take out the trash, mop the floors, clean the bathrooms, make repairs and collect the rent checks.

They are refusing guests who have made reservations months ago. The other night a man and his family arrived at night and were refused their room. He insisted that he would remain until the sun came up, so he was brought pillows to camp-out in the lobby.

Not to be rude, but you people dont get it !!! as much as I try to say it over and over ….Chetrit is huge!! he owns the Sears tower in Chicago and literally BILLIONS worth of real estate in NYC and around the country. These guys get what they want ..eventually..no matter what . You think the bought the Chelsea so they could keep it “as is” Please! it’s over …finished . Theses guys arent Andre Balaz or Ian Schager or Aby Rosen. They don’t know from style , taste, culture, least of all art!they own the Empire hotel on 63rd st . thats a tacky cash cow . and they certainly don’t care about how peoples lives are affected. They evict families from building all the time..they DON’T CARE!!!
Don’t waist time trying to figure out what the game plan is etc.. cause you can’t ! they are masters at manipulating the system to go their way. Im telling you all the long term residents that think they are protected by not obtaining a CONH you are dreaming !!!!!! GET A LAWYER NOW!

If you have a look at the comments beneath most internet articles about Joseph Chetrit’s exploits in NYC real estates, you will see dozens of commenters just as zealous as this one. Chetrit seems to attract people with an axe to grind. Why SDS wants to pretend they’re a resident of the Chelsea is beyond me, but to each their own angle.

Your naive. My comments are not based on “an axe to grind” Im not stating anything that isn’t fact ! just google Chetrit Group and you will see how they evicted many low income residents from Park west village, How the NYT wrote about them leaving a 90 year old woman’s apt in disrepair with her living in a freezing cold apt no heat and broken windows while turning the rest of the building into million dollar + condos.
There are tons of stories ..not comments!! And it is you who must not be a resident …as why would you be defending them? In my future posts I will not respond to this type of post again. Im here to give helpful information ..I hope that most of you listen to what I said about your art and getting a lawyer to try to make sure you are as protected as can be .
