In what’s shaping up as a rather eventful week at the Chelsea Hotel, staff members have been told to stop taking reservations after August Chetritandkrauss 2.  So if you want to spend one more night at the Chelsea Hotel before it closes, now is your last chance.
Though this latest move could mean many things (such as the chance to do construction under reduced scrutiny), the most obvious is that it will give Chetrit (if he closes the sale of the hotel) a way to bust the union.  Although, as required before the sale negogitations could go forward, the notoriously anti-union developer met with representatives of Hotel Workers Local a couple of weeks ago, signing a union contract good until July 2012, it looks like he’s now having second thoughts.  Either that, or he planned this all along, knowing he could render the contract meaningless with this stratagem.

Chetrit can afford to do this because the hotel has made so little money under Marlene Krauss that it will not really affect the income.  As everything the hotel takes in is going out in expenses, Chetrit could actually end up making more money just by cutting staff.

Which brings us to the most painful part of this post, the human toll that such a move Hotelwithrat will inevitably have, a consideration that Krauss and Chetrit seem constitutionally unable to comprehend.  For it looks as if at least some union employees, many of whom have been around for years and even decades and are a valued part of the Chelsea Hotel family, will be laid off.  Chetrit would then presumably contract out the remaining jobs, or perhaps keep a skeleton staff  of the non-union employees.  Then, after a year, once the union contract has expired, Chetrit will simply  reopen the Chelsea as a non-union hotel.  (Staff were told that reservations would begin to be taken again in a year—though a lot can happen in that time.)

We hope that this is not the case, as it would be a loss that the hotel can ill-afford if it is ever to return to its former glory.  Union reps were at the hotel today, meeting with lame duck manager Arnold Tamasar, and employees were told they would hear more on Monday.  We will let you know when we learn the details of this unconscionable plot, though keep in mind that the sale of the hotel has not yet been finalized.  But don’t be surprised if you see a big fat rat outside the hotel sometime soon.  Besides Chetrit, I mean.

    Memo to Joseph Chetrit:
If union workers are laid off — many of whom are like family — there will be hotel residents joining them en masse along the picket lines outside. Daily. Nightly. Weekly. Monthly. You will see and hear us feting the thirty-foot inflatable rat, for as long as it takes.
    Count on it!

There’s no way Marlene Krauss and David Elder were oblivious to Chetrit’s stance on the unions.
They’ve done exactly what they set out to do, which is to ensure that if the Chelsea isn’t run by them (albeit right into the ground), it isn’t run by anyone.
They came in and screwed with the residents of the hotel, now they’re screwing with the staff.

This would be a disgusting maneuver, and representative of everything that’s gone wrong with this city and with our society across the board. I’m only surprised the greedy landlord took so long to find an even greedier one.

Unfortunately , this is only the beginning ! I have tried to warn you about how serious the situation will be …but no one wanted to hear it! Chetrit has enough money and power to not open that hotel for as long as he likes or suits what his goal is. You really MUST get an attorney now! and I suggest an organized tenant meeting ASAP!
    Good Luck!

I’ll say this: may of us suspect what is coming, but we don’t know for certain what is coming. Our ignorance is now acting, in large part, as a buttress for our hope.
But hope for what? Chetrit IS going to bulldoze the Hotel Chelsea.
No, not literally — there are certain limits to what he can get away with — but I truly believe that the spirit will be gutted right from the place (if you catch my drift), her heart ripped right out and sent to the landfill.
There are certain residents who are devoted religiously to protecting the spirit and integrity of what they believe to be the hotel’s immutable essence. These devoted few — and few enough they are — would NEVER (never ever ever ever ever) sell out. “Unlike the Pilgrims, we are not early settlers,” one person remarked. There are even others who would sooner die than settle at all.
With that established, let’s not forget that Chetrit is a billionaire real estate magnate. And please make no mistake about it: this is not a man who is looking to advance the humanities or create a better world for you and me. He wants what he wants, he is used to getting what he wants and he has the money to back him. You know where I am going with this: money is power. Granted, certain residents may not ever sell out, not even for a solid billion of their own, but plenty of other Judahs will and already have. This, of course, includes public officials, not just righteous fanatics.
For Chetrit life is all about one thing: maximizing profits so that he can maximize his own pleasure. Perhaps Chetrit’s own soul has been gutted out. Or maybe he sold it to the devil. Either way, he is going to get what he wants, even if, as in the case of the union, he has to play a political game for show. (Does he want a union? No he doesn’t want a union! Since when has Chetrit ever protected or advocated for workers’ rights?)
And of course he (and his team) has thought all of this out thoroughly and strategically. We would be naïve or just plain foolish to believe anything less. This is not a decision that has been made with little to no information about the state of the hotel. Every business venture is a gamble, but trust me when I say that the permutations and computations have each been considered and a plan of action IS already in place.
What remains to be seen is not whether damage will be done, but how much will be.
Indeed, this is all part of Chetrit’s plan to revitalize the once luxurious, but now downtrodden and dumpy, 23rd Street area. All the fancy bells and whistles! Yes, it will be sterile, touristy and overpriced.
Meanwhile, can we prevent this or simply sing the blues about it?
I believe that we can do only the latter.
Kumbayah, my friends; we can only hold one another’s hands and cry in the face of this billionaire magnate.

    SDS,
Thanks for your continued comments. They are appreciated, since you seem to know what you are talking about. However, you don’t quite seem to be up to speed on the struggle at the Chelsea Hotel. The tenants have been very successsful for the past four years in keeping the wolves at bay. Managers would show up with eviction in mind and the next thing you know they would gone. Born & Drukier were fired. Andrew Tilley resigned. On and on. Anyway, are you a tenant in a Chetrit building? If so, e-mail off line.

SDS a.k.a. “Someone Who Knows”, residents don’t depend upon transiet bookings. The hotel does. So Chetrit is costing no one but himself. We go on business (and life) as usual.

I am not disputing that. This is not just about being able to maintain residency in a building. It is also about the Chelsea Hotel being a completely different place than it was— like, a major renovation, including the disposal of long-time employees.
If you get to keep your own nook at the hotel, fine. I am just saying that I don’t believe it will be the same hotel at all.

I agree It is not just about people living there. My husband and I adore the hotel and it’s rich history, have visited and stayed many times and do care about what happens. We have a very special anniversary vacation planned for October, did this months in advance. I am reading this stuff on this blog, this is how we find out about no more reservations. What is going to happen with our reservations? I have called the hotel 3 times, but I keep getting transferred to a voicemail.

I know you have dealt BD management etc. But what you need to understand is that the Chetrits are absolutely huge ! it’s like BD (and the like) are the local store and chetrit is walmart!
You can’t imagine the way this kind of business is run and on what level … they get what they want . And for some reason they wanted the Chelsea. All I can say is what i’ve said before ..you must all get a very very experienced LT attorney. and I think you should definitely get all the residents together and maybe even contact your local council person … although they are probably NOT going to go against BIG MONEY realestate donors ! You could contact state senator Liz Kruger”s office ..she is a great advocate for tenants rights , and has done a tremendous amount of work on it. And , again , if any of your art work is missing ..file a stolen property report NOW!!!!!

There is a rumor floating around and let’s hope it’s just a rumor that Joe Chetrit has approached the city seeking permission to remove the iconic Hotel Chelsea neon sign from the landmarked facade because of so called “bad reputation” that he believes the public associates with the name. Is he for real? The same rumor has it that his attempts at negotiating with the commission have gone nowhere fast.

Interesting enough, I had made a reservation a month ago to stay the weekend of the 27th. Completely unaware of any of latest goings on, I called yesterday to cancel my stay due to a schedule conflict. When I asked to cancel my rez, I was hung up on… not once….. not twice……. BUT THREE TIMES. Later in the evening I read all the latest, including the fact that the Chelsea was done with guests as of the 2nd. Amazing. Union busting move or not, it was no way to treat someone who frequents the Chelsea 1 to 2 weekends per month. Quite frankly, if I am going to be treated like that, I am inclined to say let the union rot.

It’s not about greedily keeping a nook, it’s more about maintaining the authenticity of a national treasure and an epicenter of artistic activity. The Chelsea’s founders intended there to be long term residents, so rent stabilized guests remaining in their homes has naturally been a priority.
There is nothing that can be done with transient rooms in the future except A) rent them to transient guests B) rent them to long term residents who will themselves become rent stabilized or C) sell them individually to prospective buyers, upgraded cosmetically. They cannot, however, accomplish a major renovation without a Certificate of Non Harassment. This is not a unique situation by a long shot, and Chetrit is not a miracle worker, he’s merely a man. Residents have a legal right to peace and enjoyment of the premises, and any major renovation would clearly interrupt said enjoyment.
If you’re familiar with Chetrit, then you know what his solution was at the Empire Hotel, which likewise had many long term tenants. However the same scenario might not play out at the Chelsea because at the Empire it is said to have relied upon long term tenants agreeing unanimously to support his CONH application. Who says he’ll get the same reception at the Chelsea? Particularly if he’s planning on duping our union employees after signing a contract?
Except for a small and inconsequential handful of kissasses, he’ll create nothing but enemies. He’s hard at work on it already.

The Chelsea site allowed me to make reservations for 4 nights in September. I’ll be in NY on business. I’m afraid that I will arrive and not have a place to stay if it all goes down. Is there a resident reading this blog who would contact me, to keep me up to date on what is going on? bstern@rochester.rr.com
    Thanks!

I had a reservation for the end of August. I’ve just been told that it will not be honoured… I’ve stayed at the Chelsea many times over the last two decades. This is all very sad, and the union-busting aspect is sickening – I hope the ghost of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn haunts the management and drives them away.
