Thanks Patti for listening to the tenants and supporters of the Chelsea Hotel. Her statement is on her blog www.pattismith.net Kudos to all of the people who made this happen. This really does show that the people have the power. The biggest thanks go to Jeremiah Moss of Jeremiah's Vanishing New York who came up with the idea of the "die in" and organized it. Thanks to everbody else who had other protests planned. Lets just hope we don't have to fight Bob Dylan next week. Here is Patti's message in its entirety: In respect for the wishes of the Chelsea Hotel Tenants Association I have canceled tonight's performance. My motivation was solely to serve the tenants. If this serves them better, than I am satisfied.

The reason that Patti Smith played a concert @ the Chelsea on we’d night was because Ed Scheetz wanted to have bday party and used his gene Kaufman to get her to play . PATTI DID NOT !!!! I REPEAT NOT know this … She was told that it was for the Chelsea tenants and that we’d would be for media & press to get the word out there about the way she would help with the future of the hotel . She was duped! As we all now know that the ” press& media” didnt even know about or attended Wed. night! As we are all wondering why would Chetrit have a concert now ? It doesn’t make sense … The hotel is being demolished and isn’t going to wreopen for almost a year! So now we know why …Ed Scheetz thought it would be cool o have Patti play his B day party . What a fool ..as he has now jepordized any real collaboration that Patti would have n the future and they made a such a hugh mess for her …when all she really was doing ..was trying to help. Ed Scheetz is a selfish après on with a bad bad history… All though Chetrit is not much better he should be ready for Ed Scheetz and his co managing the hotel ( king& grove) To run the Chelsea in the same fashion as this last event! The future does not look good!

The hallway leading to Patti’s former room was closed off with sheets of plywood on Thursday morning.
There no longer is access to her doorway. Patti’s room was the only room that a famous artist had, that was not destroyed.LikeLike

The only unoccupied room to survive. Others survive but are being lived in.
Patti’s room is being “saved” as a shrine but after her lukewarm reception at the Hotel, she won’t be back. So they may have covered it so Patti herself can’t come and see it being sledgehammered. They only put the plywood up over halls/rooms where they don’t want anyone taking pictures.
Incidentally, Patti’s room is/was an SRO and is therefore protected by law. Not that it stopped Chetrit from destroying all the other SROs like Herbert Huncke’s and Storme Delaverie’s. He must figure he has enough money to pay fines forever, because sooner or later the city will notice that the SRO rooms are missing and slap him with fines.LikeLike
