Mia Hanson called to remind us that today is the 5th anniversary of the death of the Japanese painter 
Hiroya. At least for now some of his art remains on the walls of the Hotel. So when you stand and gaze at the crazy graffiti paintings take a moment to recall the life of the painter. I’m sure a lot of people have Hiroya stories that they may want to share so add them to the comments section.

yesterday afternoon we were gifted a hiroya painting by
one of the business owners on the block. they didn’t
seem to know much about the painting’s history or even to have known
who hiroya was, so we were eager to accept and have it back at the hotel. first, though,
the painting was carried across 23rd to a restaurant where, it just so happened,
the counterperson was the very individual who first received the painting
from hiroya in 2000. serendipitous without a doubt, but even more
so when we read on the blog that today, the painting’s first full day back at the chelsea,
is the anniversary of hiroya’s passing. anybody buying that chelsea ghosts stuff? r.i.p. hiroyaLikeLike

Hiroya was one of the residents who believed in ghosts. Many night, taking break from writing after midnight, I sat in the lobby with Hiroya and Dee Dee and the Ghosts were a favorite subject.
When I lost my apartment at the Chelsea, I lost the painting Hiroya gave me one Valentine’s Day (as well as a number Herbert Gentry print and some other Chelsea art). No idea where it is now, but I hope my Hiroya painting has s serendipitous a journey as yours and has landed with someone else who appreciates it.LikeLike
